Symbols

Badge

The golden key was selected by the Founders as the badge of Kappa Kappa Gamma. The first keys were handmade by jewelers and worn in the hair, on the bodice, or as a brooch. Today, they are one inch in length and are either plain gold or jeweled. On the reverse side the member’s initiation information and initials are engraved.

New Member Pin

The new member pin is a Delta of dark blue enameled on silver that encloses a Sigma of light blue enamel. The pin is only to be worm by a woman pledged to membership in the Fraternity and is surrendered to the President of the chapter at the time of initiation.

Colors

The colors of the Fraternity are light blue and dark blue, which were adopted by the Alpha Chapter less than two years after the founding of the fraternity.

Flower

The fleur-de-lis was chosen as the Fraternity flower in 1890 because of its general dignity, stateliness, and grace.

Jewel

The sapphire has been the fraternity jewel since 1890 and is recognized as a symbol of truth, sincerity, and constancy. It is also the gem of autumn, the time of the birth of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Coat-of-Arms

The Fraternity Coat of Arms combines the symbols of Kappa - the key, the Greek-letters, the new member pin, the fleur-de-lis, the owl, and the two blues. It also contains the head of Minerva, the Roman Goddess of Wisdom, because the founders took pride that Kappa was born mature like Minerva, who sprang out of the head of her father full grown.

Animal

The owl is the bird of wisdom as well as the bird of Minerva, the Goddess of Wisdom. The owl was first used as a Kappa symbol in 1881.
